Rehab would be a step up

English pop vixen/trainwreck/scarecrow Amy Winehouse continues to pile up those blues-generating dues with a trip to Scotland Yard to answer to assault accusations.

To the Daily Duck's scientifically minded readership I pose this question - how long can those soda-straw legs continue to hold up that condor's nest on her head without giving way?

I can understand how people start drinking. They see other people drinking and carousing and it looks like fun.

But I don't get seeing people with their faces collapsing and teeth falling out etc. from meth and stuff like that and saying, 'Hey, I want somma dat!'

Harry:

In general, that's a good question. But it doesn't really apply to Winehouse, who is English.

I don't think that's how it works. From my observations from my college days of people using addictive drugs is that even for something like meth, only about 1/4 become addicted, it takes a long time (months or years) for the negative effects to become clearly visible, and 1/2 of those addicted are able to get over it on their own before the serious consequences really set in.

Indeed, as far as addiction and adverse consequences of chemical abuse is concerned, the rates of serious negative consequences from various drugs aren't all that different from alcohol (again from my observations) - most people can use alcohol in moderation their whole lives but a few end up being drunken bums living on the streets.
