Breaks My Heart...

Former Iraqi Dictator Claims Beatings While in Detention
By MARIAM FAM, AP

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Dec. 21) - Saddam Hussein insisted again Thursday that he had been beaten by his American captors...

When the court gave the former leader an opportunity to cross-examine witnesses, Saddam instead used the time to expand on earlier assertions that he had been abused in custody. [...]

On Wednesday Saddam told the court he'd been beaten "everywhere" on his body and insisted the marks were still there. He did not display any marks.

Why does he believe that anyone cares ?

We could work him over with a rubber hose every night, as far as the American and Iraqi publics are concerned.

The American and British public couldn't give a damn about his rantings. And he's apparently very much yesterday's man amongst the Iraqis, who are more concerned with starting again with a new democratic government.

So Saddam's audience is the anti-American Muslim world and to some extent, the anti-war Left in Europe. Whether he is aware that this is his only audience and is therefore playing to it, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I wouldn't assume too much cynical manipulation on his part, he probably actually believes that there are people who care about his plight. That's how megalomaniacs are. For someone to have risen to that level of absolute power, it would be unusual for it not to have affected an outsized sense of self-importance. His miscalculation about the intentions of Bush I and II during both wars shows that he is a master of the art of denial. I don't doubt that he still is in deep denial about his ultimate fate.
